Get to know Woolfy

Russell studied broadcasting at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts (WAAPA) under the guidance of legendary former ABC broadcasters, Earl Reeve and Grant Woodhams. Following this he headed to the country with stints at 6SE Esperance and 6KG Kalgoorlie before moving to Karratha for 5 years as ABC’s National Resources Reporter. It was in this position that Russell developed a deep understanding of Australia’s mining and resources sector as well as other primary industries such as pastoralism and fisheries.

Russell spent a vast period of time working as a journalist on many of Australia’s oil and gas projects including the Barrow and Veranus Islands. To further develop his knowledge of the resources sector, Russell has travelled on iron ore trains, visited underground mines and toured LNG plants. Thanks to this experience Russell now possesses a strong affinity with Australia’s resources sector.

Thanks to his talents as a journalist, Russell was invited to join 720 ABC Perth in 2005 to report on business matters and later was given his own program as the host of ‘Drive’. Drive is a segment that is aired weekday afternoons from 3pm to 6pm and includes interviews, news, sports, music and of course a lot of laughs. Russell spent almost a decade hosting Drive on 720 ABC Perth before deciding to move on to focus on community engagement work through his role as an MC. In this time Russell has built a loyal fan base that to this day still reminisce about the times ‘Woolfy’ entertained them on their drive home. During his time as the host of ‘Drive’  Russell also worked for a period of five years as the ‘ABC TV News’ weather presenter bringing not just the weather updates but also a sunny disposition into Australian homes.
